Automatic watches
How does an automatic watch work?
Inside the movement sits a semicircular weight, the rotor. Every motion of your wrist makes it turn, and through a gear train it winds the mainspring. That spring releases its power evenly into the going train, where the balance wheel divides it into equal beats. An automatic watch therefore needs neither a battery nor a power socket, only movement.
How long does an automatic watch run once I take it off?
This is called the power reserve and ranges from roughly 38 to 80 hours depending on the movement. Classic calibres such as the Seiko 4R35 manage around 41 hours, more recent movements like the Powermatic 80 used by Tissot or the Certina Powermatic last about 80 hours. With 80 hours the watch survives a whole weekend on the nightstand.
Do I have to wear the watch every day?
If you wear it regularly it winds itself. If it sits unworn for longer it will stop, and you simply wind it by hand, usually twenty to thirty turns of the crown, then set the time. This does the watch no harm. A watch winder is convenient but not necessary, although it does save resetting the date and moon phase on more complex models.
How accurate is an automatic watch?
Ordinary movements run at about minus ten to plus thirty seconds a day, certified chronometers at minus four to plus six seconds. A quartz watch is more accurate. Anyone buying an automatic is buying mechanics, craft and longevity, not the last second. The position the watch rests in overnight has a noticeable effect on its rate, which can sometimes be used to compensate.
How often does an automatic watch need servicing?
As a rule of thumb every five to eight years. The movement is disassembled, cleaned, re-oiled and regulated, and the gaskets are replaced. If the watch runs noticeably off, stops, or the crystal fogs up, do not wait. We accept watches at our shop in Solingen and, through our watchmaker service, by post as well.
What is the difference to a hand-wound watch?
Both are mechanical. A hand-wound watch has no rotor, so you wind it yourself each day. That lets it be slimmer and often gives a clearer view of a tidier movement. The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical is a well known example. An automatic takes that daily ritual off your hands.
What does a good automatic watch cost to start with?
Serious automatic watches start at around 320 euros with us. In this range you will find Seiko 5 Sports and Seiko Presage, Tissot with the Powermatic 80, plus Certina, Mido and Hamilton. From there the transition upwards is gradual: from roughly 1,000 euros you add sapphire crystal, finer finishing and chronometer certification.
