What is a chronograph?
A chronograph is a watch with a built in stopwatch. The pushers beside the crown start, stop and reset an additional seconds hand. Elapsed minutes and hours are shown on small subdials, the totalisers.
What is the difference between a chronograph and a chronometer?
The words sound similar but mean different things. A chronograph is a function, namely timing. A chronometer is a seal of quality: the movement has passed a rate test, at COSC in five positions and three temperatures. A watch can be both, but need not be.
How do I operate a chronograph correctly?
The upper pusher starts and stops, the lower one resets to zero. Only reset once the measurement has been stopped, otherwise you strain the mechanism on simpler movements. Column wheel chronographs with a flyback function are the exception, as they are designed to reset while running.
May the chronograph run continuously?
On quartz chronographs this is uncritical and only costs battery life. On mechanical movements a permanently engaged chronograph draws on the power reserve and increases wear. If you do not need it, it is better switched off.
What is the tachymeter scale on the bezel for?
It measures average speed. Start the chronograph at the beginning of a kilometre and stop it at the end, and the seconds hand points to the speed per hour on the scale. One minute of elapsed time corresponds to the value 60, thirty seconds to 120.
Quartz or mechanical, which is better for a chronograph?
A quartz chronograph measures more precisely, is lighter, less expensive and needs less maintenance. Seiko even combines this with solar technology in the Prospex Speedtimer. A mechanical chronograph is the more elaborate movement with a tangible pusher action and visible engineering, but it costs more and requires servicing. It is a question of what you want, not of quality.
