Stainless steel bracelets
Which stainless steel is used for watches?
The usual choice is 316L, a chromium nickel molybdenum steel also used in medical technology. It resists corrosion, polishes well and is kind to the skin. Some manufacturers use 904L, which is even more resistant to acids and appears slightly brighter.
Can I wear a stainless steel bracelet with a nickel allergy?
In most cases yes. 316L does contain nickel, but its dense passive layer releases almost none of it and the limits of the European nickel regulation are met. If you react very sensitively, titanium or a leather strap is the better choice.
How do I clean a stainless steel bracelet?
Lukewarm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will lift skin oils and soap residue out of the links. Rinse thoroughly afterwards and pat dry. This is worth doing every few weeks, because most skin irritation is caused not by the metal but by what collects beneath it. The watch must of course be water resistant with the crown firmly closed.
Can scratches be removed?
A watchmaker can work fine marks out of brushed surfaces and re-polish polished sections. Each time a little material is removed, so it should not become a habit. Household remedies and polishing pastes usually blur the boundary between brushed and polished surfaces, which ends up more noticeable than the scratch itself.
How is a stainless steel bracelet shortened?
Via screw or pin links, depending on the model. This should be done while the watch is new, so the clasp sits centred on the underside of the wrist. We shorten the bracelet free of charge on every watch bought from us, in our shop in Solingen at the time of purchase or, on request, before dispatch. Keep the removed links somewhere safe.
Link bracelet or mesh, which suits better?
A link bracelet has more presence and a sportier look, and it can be adjusted link by link. A Milanese mesh of fine steel sits more softly and adjusts continuously, but reads as elegant rather than sporty. On a slender wrist mesh is often the more comfortable choice.
