How long does a leather strap last?
Worn daily, usually one to two years. Leather is a natural material and it works: perspiration, sunlight and friction take their toll. That is not a defect but wear. Alternating between two watches, or letting the strap rest occasionally, extends its life considerably.
May a leather strap get wet?
Better not. Water dissolves the tanning agents, the leather hardens, cracks where it bends and develops an unpleasant smell. Showering, swimming and sauna come at the expense of the strap, even if the watch itself is water resistant. If it does get wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature, never on a radiator.
How do I care for a leather strap?
Wipe it with a dry, soft cloth so that skin oils do not soak in. Do not buckle it too tightly, which lets air circulate between skin and leather. Use leather care products sparingly and only on the outside, as on the inside they can leave marks on clothing.
What types of leather are there?
Calfskin is the standard: fine grained, supple and affordable. Cowhide is tougher and more robust. Alligator and crocodile patterns are usually embossed calfskin, genuine alligator remains reserved for expensive models. Nubuck and suede look matte and soft but pick up dirt more quickly.
Can I change the strap myself?
With quick release spring bars yes, a small lever retracts the bar and the strap is swapped in seconds. Without quick release you need a spring bar tool and a steady hand, otherwise the lugs get scratched. When in doubt we will do it for you.
How do I find the right strap width?
Measure the distance between the lugs on the case in millimetres. On ladies watches 12 to 18 millimetres is usual. The width has to match exactly: too narrow and the strap wobbles, too wide and it will not fit. Choose the length according to your wrist circumference.
