What speaks for an automatic watch as a ladies watch?
It needs no battery and, properly cared for, lasts decades. Many models show the movement through a display back, which makes them jewellery with an inner life. And it is independent: no battery change, no charging cable, only your movement.
Are automatic watches for women not too large and heavy?
That was once the case. Modern movements are slim enough for cases from around 28 to 36 millimetres. The Tissot PRX in 35 millimetres is a good example, as are the automatic models from Certina and Mido. What matters is less the diameter than the overall height and the shape of the lugs, because these determine how the watch sits on a slender wrist.
How long does the power reserve last?
Between roughly 38 and 80 hours depending on the movement. Worn daily, the watch winds itself. Left off over the weekend, a watch with a short power reserve will have stopped by Monday. Simply wind and reset it. Movements with 80 hours, such as the Powermatic 80, bridge longer breaks as well.
Will the watch wind sufficiently if I move very little?
With desk work and a calm daily routine it can run short, particularly with small movements and correspondingly small rotors. In that case give the watch an extra manual wind in the morning, twenty turns is enough. This is not a fault of the watch but a question of how it is worn.
How accurate is an automatic watch?
Ordinary movements run at about minus ten to plus thirty seconds a day. That is inherent to mechanics and not a defect. If you need accuracy to the second, a quartz or radio-controlled watch is the better choice; if you value mechanics, the deviation is a small price.
How do I care for an automatic watch?
Always push the crown firmly home, and screw it down on watches with a screw-down crown, otherwise water resistance suffers. Wipe case and bracelet occasionally with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not change the date between 9 pm and 3 am, as the date mechanism is engaged during that window. Have the watch serviced every five to eight years.
What do automatic watches for women cost?
