The Philosophy of Union Glashütte
In 1893, Johannes Dürrstein founded the Union Glashütte brand, and today, 128 years later, it still stands for high-quality German watchmaking craftsmanship. The timelessly beautiful watches are meticulously handcrafted in the Glashütte atelier. Union Glashütte stands for:
• Long tradition
• Great precision
• Much attention to detail
• Clear design
• High-quality standards
• Good value for money
• Modern watchmaking craftsmanship
• Diverse collections
Their long tradition and dedication to fine watchmaking have secured them a permanent place in the annals of German watchmaking. As the brand's founder, Johannes Dürrstein, demonstrated with his forward-thinking vision of a modern Glashütte watch, this history is maintained, while also looking to the future, rooted in tradition. Traditional mechanics combined with technical innovations and modern technologies, with a high degree of handcrafting, unite tradition with modern watchmaking. Equal importance is placed on the precision of each individual model. Each watch is assembled in several complex stages, individually regulated, refined, and inspected. At Union Glashütte, handcrafting plays a central role, involving over 200 tiny individual parts. Each hand is carefully placed, the accuracy of the movement is meticulously adjusted, and a sapphire crystal case back is added to showcase and enhance the movement. The clear designs are artfully refined with various decorations. However, no unnecessary embellishments are used, which could detract from the typical German form and function. When it comes to material selection, sustainability is a given for Union Glashütte. The watches combine classic, timeless designs with an unusually high level of quality. This was also important to the entrepreneur Johannes Dürrstein in 1893 high quality at affordable prices.
The History of Union Glashütte
On January 19, 1874, Johannes Dürrstein founded the wholesale watch company Dürrstein & Comp. in Dresden. In the same year, he took over the general distribution for the watches of A. Lange & Söhne from Glashütte. In 1882, Julius Bergter joined as a teacher at the German Watchmaking School Glashütte and soon became a close technical advisor to Dürrstein & Comp. in Dresden. In 1893, the Dresden watch wholesale company founded the Union Glashütte watch factory. That same year, he presented and sold a Grand Complication in Chicago and received a trademark with a stylized temple to certify the authenticity of Union Glashütte watches. In 1900, under the direction of Julius Bergter, the Universal Watch was completed and offered for 12,000 marks. After the death of his brother, Friedrich Dürrstein, his wife Lina continued the business of Dürrstein & Comp., Dresden, with their sons. In 1907, the marine chronometer was introduced. In 1919, Hugo Bogusch succeeded Julius Bergter and served as director of the Union watch factory until 1925. During this transitional period, the flattest pocket watch movements in Glashütte were manufactured. Almost 100 years later, in 2020, after being removed from the commercial register in 1919 and reestablished in 1996, The Swatch Group took over both companies. Union Glashütte was restructured and has since presented itself as an independent brand with its own production and collections.
Diverse Collections from Union Glashütte What makes Union Glashütte watches special is the finely finished internal workings that can be admired through the glass case back. The collection is diverse: straightforward design and uncompromisingly clear form language are represented by the Viro model. Noramis, on the other hand, stands for the timeless elegance of the 1950s and 1960s. Belisar is sporty and full of character, with the typical screwed-on flanks making it a visual highlight; this model is part of the brand's roots. Averin belongs to the new brand of Union Glashütte, with its square shape that stylishly sets it apart from the crowd.
