Lapis Lazuli – The Gemstone of the Night Sky
The deep, luminous blue of lapis lazuli in the high quality used by Bernd Wolf evokes a sparkling night sky and pairs beautifully with the 24-karat gold plating of his jewelry pieces. The name “lapis lazuli” comes from Persian and means “blue stone.” This gemstone is characterized by its golden pyrite inclusions, which lend it exceptional depth. White calcite inclusions may also occur, though they are considered less desirable.
Lapis lazuli is mined at high altitudes in the Hindu Kush mountains between Russia and Afghanistan and has been treasured for its purity and beauty for thousands of years. Whether worn with an elegant evening dress or a simple blouse, lapis lazuli adds a unique radiance to any outfit.
As early as the 3rd millennium BCE, lapis lazuli was valued in Europe and Egypt as a gemstone and pigment. It was believed to protect against the evil eye and was used as a remedy for gout, blood disorders, and insomnia. Known as the stone of friendship, it also symbolizes stability and trust.
