Garnet – The Gemstone of Fiery Sparkle
Garnet is renowned for its exceptional hardness and its dazzling light refraction, reminiscent of a diamond’s brilliance. In earlier times, most jewelry garnets were sourced from Bohemia; today, they are primarily mined in the USA, India, South Africa, Brazil, and Sri Lanka. The garnet used by Bernd Wolf also comes from these high-quality deposits.
Garnet is the umbrella term for a group of ten gemstones with similar compositions. The deep red pyrope, whose name originates from the Greek word for “fiery,” represents the classic image of garnet. The term itself derives from the Latin word granum, referring to garnet's characteristic occurrence in granular crystal form.
With its wine-red hue and intense sparkle, garnet is a perfect addition to elegant evening wear, lending every wearer a noble, feminine expression.
In ancient and medieval times, garnet was believed to possess special powers. It was thought to shine on its own and was called the “red carbuncle stone.” In India and Buddhism, it was revered as a symbol of the fire of eternal transformation. The healer Hildegard of Bingen also valued garnet, recommending it to strengthen the heart. To this day, garnet is regarded as a healing stone that is thought to support heart health, blood flow, and mental well-being.
